Yeah, London is touristy. It calls to us travellers like sugar to a colony of ants. How could we resist that sweet treat (I'm looking at you Big Ben!)? And so we swarm. Some countries, some cities, some attractions are worth the crowds, the hassle and the cliché, and London is definitely one of them.
Düsseldorf is a city for exploring on foot. So, when I twisted my ankle stumbling out of the bus toilet after not being able to find the flush button, it was more than an inconvenience. And when I twisted it twice more on the nine minute walk to our hotel, it seemed like our holiday might be a real dud.
We didn't plan on going to Valkenburg, but we heard it was the local place to go for pubs and people watching. It turns out there was a lot more to see and do, and we were surprised and disappointed to return home to our Netherlands Lonely Planet guide and see this charming place described simply as, "an over-commercialized tour bus destination." That's a travesty to us! We had such a lovely time there, so we'd like to introduce you to the real Valkenburg.
After Brian completed his Ireland bike tour, I joined him in Dublin to celebrate. We had one full day there to explore, and I was determined to see as much as possible. I picked out six sights I hoped to fit in, planned a very efficient route based on the hours of each establishment, and we headed out to see if we could fit it all in!
